Reelworld Screen Institute is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and showcasing Indigenous and racialized voices in the screen industry. Founded in 2000 by award-winning actress and producer Tonya Williams, Reelworld has been a catalyst for change, fostering diversity and inclusion within the film, television, and digital media sectors. Through its innovative programs, Reelworld Screen Institute provides opportunities for emerging talent, champions diverse storytelling, and advocates for a more equitable and representative media landscape.
At the core of Reelworld Screen Institute's mission is the belief that everyone deserves to see themselves reflected on screen. Recognizing the systemic barriers that hinder marginalized communities from accessing and thriving in the screen industry, Reelworld actively works to break down these barriers and create a more inclusive space. By amplifying voices that have been historically underrepresented, Reelworld Screen Institute seeks to challenge stereotypes, broaden perspectives, and foster understanding among audiences.
One of the institute's flagship programs is the Reelworld Film Festival, a dynamic showcase of compelling films and documentaries from around the world. This annual event not only celebrates diverse storytelling but also serves as a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work to industry professionals, distributors, and audiences. Through thought-provoking films, engaging panel discussions, and networking opportunities, the festival cultivates an environment of collaboration and dialogue, paving the way for meaningful connections and career opportunities for emerging talent.
In addition to the festival, Reelworld Screen Institute offers a number of professional Development opportunities.

Reelworld’s Emerging 20 (E20) program is a unique initiative that supports emerging talent from underrepresented communities. Each year, a select group of filmmakers is chosen to participate in an intensive year-long program, receiving instruction on various aspects of screenwriting, one-on-one feedback from professional story editors, guidance from industry veterans, and opportunities to hear a table read of their completed work. The E20 program not only provides invaluable support and mentorship but also acts as a launching pad for emerging screenwriters, arming them with a completed, polished script and helping them to navigate the complex landscape of the screen industry.
In addition to its programs for emerging talent, Reelworld Screen Institute actively engages with industry leaders, organizations, and policymakers to advocate for systemic change within the screen industry.
